The photo and following article is taken from The Philadelphia Daily News, special supplement entitled 'SIX HUNDRED AND THIRTY,' October 26, 1987. The special supplement was issued in conjunction with the dedication of the Philadelphia Viet Nam Memorial. "His wisdom is consumed in confidence," wrote a senior classmate in Abraham Lincoln High School's 1961 yearbook. Six years later, Allen was an Army helicopter pilot who had flown more than 125 Viet Nam combat missions in eight weeks for the 116th Assault Helicopter Company of the 25th Division. The 24-year-old first lieutenant had gone on to Pennsylvania State University after graduating from Lincoln, where another classmate described him as "well known ... real pleasant." He was engaged to be married when he died on November 18, 1967, and was survived by his parents.
