The SLZHS Veterans Memorial Project annually awards a scholarship to a deserving SLZHS student in honor of the men named above.

Until recently Gunnery Sergeant Joseph Menusa, USMC, was a Marine Corps recruiter at San Lorenzo High School. A veteran of the 1991 Persian Gulf War, GySgt Menusa voluntarily left his recruiting billet in January 2003 for assignment to the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division.

We now have the sad duty of reporting his death:

Gunnery Sergeant Joseph Menusa, USMC
Killed in Action in Iraq on 27 March 2003.
In addition to his parents and two brothers,
he is survived by his wife Stacy and son Joshua, age 3,
of San Jose, California.
He was buried with honors on 11 April 2003,
Santa Maria Cemetery, Santa Maria, California.

The team members have decided that the 2003 Veterans Memorial Scholarship will not be awarded to an SLZHS student, but will be presented to GySgt Manusa's son Joshua in the form of a savings bond.

Jerry Henry USMC

Jerry, it's been 45 years almost to date ... We were in our freshman year at Tennyson High, Hayward. I myself was in the Marine Corps and in Vietnam 67-68. I came home on leave before I went to Nam ... and saw the notice of your death. You were a good friend in High School. I can't remember if we saw each other at Camp Pendleton, Calif. USMC Base. Your death went deep inside.

On my way home in August 1967, I ran into Gene Church, THS 65, he was going to Nam within a few days. I went to Vietnam late August 67, DaNang area. I received a letter in Sep-Oct 67, that Gene Church USMC had been killed in country. Jerry, I was so taken by the loss of you and Gene...

May you both Rest in Peace,
Semper Fi, my brothers.

Jerry, it has been forty years since we were fighting beside each other in Vietnam. I have wondered what happened to you. Last night, April 17, 2007, I decided to look on The Virtual Wall, there I discovered your name. I cannot describe the emptiness that I feel.

You were my best friend even though we only knew each other a few months. We fought together on Operation Union and you were with me when I stepped on the land mine. You disregarded your own safety to jump into the thickness to come to my aid. I will always remember your words to others while I was being treated "Those guys from Birmingham, Alabama are tough, right Sam?". I don't recall responding, but your words will always remain with me.

You were a true example of class, understanding, caring, but one tough Marine.

Be at peace, my brother,
Semper Fi
