A Note from The Virtual Wall On 05 Oct 1968 D Company, 1/28th Infantry, lost ten soldiers to enemy mortar and small arms fire: 1LT Aubrey E. Jacobs, Nashville, TN MSG Antonio B. Jaime, Alice, TX SP4 Joseph C. Aronce, El Paso, TX SP4 Johnny W. Humphrey, Vidalia, GA SP4 Leo R. Meyer, Fond Du Lac, WI, 61st Infantry Platoon (Combat Tracker) SP4 James C. Moore, Cincinnati, OH PFC Johnnie R. Compton, Sylacauga, AL PFC Gerald E. Hammond, Glens Falls, NY PFC Henry L. Kertis, Wabbaseka, AR PFC Richard E. Letendre, Nashua, NH, Medic (HHC w/ D/1/28) The 61st Infantry Platoon (Combat Tracker) provided dog and handler teams to work with infantry units. In this instance SP4 Meyer's tracking dog, Bruce, already had served in Vietnam for a year or more, and he survived his master. Bruce continued to serve with the 61st Combat Trackers until 1970, when he and his handler (Louis Caputo) were transfered to the 557th IPCT.
